How To Buy A Memory Foam Mattress – you’d think it would be as straight forward as walking into a shop and picking one, or jumping online and clicking “buy”. But there’s a lot more to buying a memory foam mattress if you want to get it right, and if you want to get the best match for you and your circumstances. In this guide on how to buy a memory foam mattress, I’ll take you through the entire process in 3 easy steps: from thinking about what you need to recommending a mattress that will be a great fit for you.

How To Buy A Memory Foam Mattress Online: The Steps You Need To Take To Get It Right

There is a plethora of memory foam mattresses available for you to buy online. There are so many it can seem a little paralyzing knowing where to start. Here’s how you figure it out:

1. Think About Your Needs

Thinking about how you sleep, your body weight, who you share a bed with, and anything else that impacts on your sleep situation will help you narrow down the search for your perfect mattress before you even start looking at your options.

  • Do you weigh 130lb or less? You’ll want a softer mattress.
  • Do you weigh 130 – 230lb? You’ll do fine with a medium feel mattress.
  • Do you weigh more than 230lb? You’ll want a firmer mattress, and one that’s been built specifically with you in mind.
  • Do you sleep hot? You’ll want a mattress that has lots of cooling technology because traditional memory foam traps heat.
  • Do you sleep on your side? You’ll want a mattress that’s got foams that are going to hug your shoulder to give deeper pressure relief, rather than bouncier or fast responding foams.
  • Do you sleep on your stomach? You’ll want a mattress that’s reasonably firm to ensure your hips do not dip through the night.
  • Do you share a bed with someone who tosses and turns a lot during the night? Go for an all foam mattress (instead of a memory foam and pocket coil combination) as these are best at minimizing motion isolation.
  • Do you like to sleep right on the edge of your bed, or do you use the edge to sit on for dressing? Go for a hybrid of memory foam and pocket coils as these mattresess have the best edge support.

2. Think About What Else You’ll Need From Your Mattress Company

When you’re buying a mattress online instead of in a store, there are some key factors that are critical for a company to excel at. These are:

  • Excellent customer service: you’ll want to feel assured that if anything goes wrong with your online purchase, your issue will be acted on quickly and you’re not going to be stuck with a dud mattress.
  • A generous sleep trial: it takes around 30 days for your body to fully adjust to a new mattress, and for the mattress to wear in. You’re going to want a mattress that has at least a 90 day sleep trial, so you can really test it out from the comfort of your own home. You’ll also want to be sure that returns are going to be hassle free if you end up not liking it.
  • A good warranty: 10 years is the standard warranty for a memory foam mattress, and I honestly wouldn’t expect one to last longer than this anyway. Steer clear of mattresses that only have a 1-5 year warranty.
  • A good deal: when you’re buying online, you can’t haggle or talk through a deal like you often can in store. Don’t worry, there is such fierce competition in the online mattress market that you can buy a memory foam mattress online with a good discount. In fact, I suggest you never pay the full recommended price because many brands offer great discounts even outside of traditional sales periods such as Black Friday

3. Start Looking At Mattresses That Meet Your Requirements

How To Buy A Memory Foam Mattress - Brand Montage

Okay, so you’ve thought about exactly what you need from a mattress and it’s time to start looking at the brands. I’ve got some great suggestions here for you, which will cover all the scenarios I’ve covered above. Each of these are mattresses I’ve reviewed in great detail and meet all the requirements I set out in Step 2 above.

Let’s start looking:

Cooling Mattresses:

  • The best all foam mattress for cooling is GhostBed Luxe, with two cooling layers and gel infused foams. It has a medium feel so will work well for average weight sleepers who sleep in any position. Read my detailed review here.
  • The best hybrid memory foam mattress for cooling is the Brooklyn Aurora. It also has specialized cooling layers, and comes in soft, medium, or firm so there’s something for everyone. Read my detailed review here.

Deep contouring mattresses:

  • If you’re looking for that really true, traditional, memory foam hug you can’t go past Tempur-Pedic. The pioneers of memory foam beds, and the first to take the technology from NASA ,they’ve continued to innovate and have a range of firmness options and extra cooling technologies. My Tempur Pedic recommendation would be the Breeze mattress, which is a cooling mattress available in a variety of firmness levels. Read my detailed review here.

Great For Side Sleepers:

Nolah is an excellent choice for side sleepers, in fact it has been built exactly with you in mind! Read my detailed review here.

Great For Light Body Weight:

  • Layla is a good option for you. It actually has a flippable design, with one soft side and one firm side. This is perfect for you, you can experience the softness you need, but you’ve also got the reassurance of a firmer side if you decide you want a bit more support. Read my detailed review here.

Great For Heavy Body Weight:

  • I’ve got an entire article about the best memory foam mattresses for heavy people, which you can read here. Spoiler alert: you’ll love the WinkBed Plus.

You Want To Buy Online But Don’t Want A Mattress In A Box:

  • Tempur Pedic (which I’ve talked about above) doesn’t come in a box, simply because the foams are too dense to go through the roll pack machine which compresses mattresses for shipping.
  • Saatva: Saatva is unique to all the others in this article in that it has a thin layer of memory foam atop a double coil support system. I’ve personally owned a similar mattress in the past and it was amazing. Saatva also does not come compressed in a box, but has free white glove delivery which includes removal of your old mattress if you wish. Read my detailed review here.
