Ecosa, Napp And Winkl Comparison – A Guide To NZ’s Big 3
New Zealand has three all foam mattress-in-a-box options: Ecosa, Napp, and Winkl. Each has different characteristics and different reasons why one might be the best mattress for you over the others. In this Ecosa, Napp, and Winkl comparison post, I’ll give you a side-by-side overview of each, price breakdown, and give some buying recommendations to help you choose.
For even more detail, find out how each mattress compares with the other:
Similarities
- All offer a sleep trial of more than three months
- All offer at least a 10 year warranty (Winkl offer 15 on their Lux mattress)
- All feature a three layer foam construction with two comfort layers and a polyfoam support core (you’ll find detailed comparisons of their construction in the “Vs” posts linked above)
- They are priced similarly
- They will deliver for free (returns are also free, don’t worry about having to get that mattress back in its box)
- They make good use of cooling technologies inside their foams to help regulate your body temperature during the night
Differences
- Napp and Winkl are NZ owned, Ecosa is Australian owned
- Napp is made in NZ, Winkl and Ecosa are made in China
- Winkl offer two mattresses, Napp and Winkl make one (click here to read more comparison of the two Winkl models)
- Napp and Winkl are designed to be a universally comfortable medium feel, Ecosa is firmer
- Ecosa is designed so you can switch the layers around to adjust the firmness of the mattress (but to be honest, it feels pretty firm no matter how you set it up), Napp and Winkl come in one configuration
- In a Consumer NZ investigation of three Australasian mattresses in boxes (Napp and Ecosa were included, along with an Australian brand: Koala), Napp was found to be the most durable
- Napp is the only one in NZ using Hygroflex foam inside its mattress (read more about why that’s special here)
- They make different accessories to go with their mattresses
- Ecosa make the biggest size range, followed by Napp

Price Breakdown
As mentioned above, there is always a deal going for each of these mattresses. Never pay full retail! My links will always make sure you can get whatever today’s best deal is. The exception here is Napp, they don’t run discounts but instead run an exceptionally competitive everyday price for their NZ made mattress.
Which Is Better: Ecosa, Napp Or Winkl?
The answer is going to depend on YOU, there is no one answer. The great news is they are all much cheaper than mattresses from shops, without compromising on any comfort. In fact, they are great for your back. Here are my recommendations:
Buy Ecosa If:
- You want a firm mattress
- You like to sleep on your stomach: a firmer mattress will be better for your spine because it will have more support through your hips
- You weigh more than 150kg: you need a firm mattress to give you adequate support. Interestingly, if you buy a softer mattress, it can end up feeling too hard because you sink through the comfort layers and feel the support core of the mattress – this isn’t what you want, you want to feel well supported
Buy Napp If:
- You’re not sure what firmness you want
- You share a bed with someone who likes a different firmness than you. Napp will be a better compromise
- You like to sleep on your side: Napp will give you more pressure relief through your shoulder
- You want to support local
Buy Winkl If:
- You want 20 extra nights in your sleep trial
- You’re interested in the upgrades that come with the Lux mattress (I think this is a great mattress for its price, much better value than all the extras a big box store might try to charge for)
