Which Puffy mattress is the best: the original Puffy with its budget friendly all foam construction, or the Puffy Lux hybrid or Royal hybrid with more features? Puffy’s best seller is the Puffy Lux, but that’s not actually my top choice of the Puffy range. For me, the best Puffy mattress is easily the Puffy Royal. It’s got the most features, and even though it’s the most expensive of the 3 Puffy mattresses, it’s actually the best value for money. Let me introduce you quickly:

Puffy Original Mattress – The One That Started It All

The Puffy Original was the very first Puffy mattress, the one that started them all. Highly rated by Consumer Reports, the Puffy Original is the mattress that Puffy have built their massive brand following upon.

As you’ll see, it’s a decent all-foam mattress, but I don’t think there’s anything amazingly special about it. It’s a good mattress for a fair price so if you DO choose to buy this mattress you’ll be pretty happy with it.

• 10 Inch height with 5 layer construction
• Puffy counts the cover as 2 layers as it performs 2 functions: the top is a stain resistant stretch knit, and the base is grip resistant
• The 3 internal layers are:
  • Foam 1: Cooling cloud foam
  • Foam 2: Climate comfort foam
  • Foam 3: Firm core support
  • You can basically take this as the top two work as comfort and transition foams that are going to provide comfort and contouring, while the bottom foam is the high density support foam. It’s a pretty standard construction for a 10 inch high all foam mattress, but you’re getting foams exclusively designed by Puffy.
• This mattress is the firmest in the Puffy range, with a rating of around 7 out of 10 (firmer side of medium)
  • I’d say this one is best for back sleepers or average weight stomach sleepers. It’s not my top choice for side or combo sleepers as it’s probably going to feel too firm through your shoulder and possibly through your hips.

Priced from $799 (you’ll get a juicy discount, often $300 off), the Puffy Original costs exactly what I would expect for a mattress of this design and construction. Like I said before, there’s nothing really special about it, but you ARE getting a solid made in USA mattress for a very fair price. Overall: a solid buy, just not my top choice of the Puffy range.

Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress – Puffy’s Best Seller

The Puffy Lux is where the Puffy mattresses start to get more interesting. First up, you get the switch from a foam support core to adaptive pocket coils. You also get more innovations in the foam layers. The Puffy Lux is the best selling mattress in the Puffy range because it’s where nice features meet a price point that is still budget friendly:

• 12 Inch height with 6 layer construction
• Puffy counts the cover as 2 layers as it performs 2 functions: the top is a stain resistant stretch knit, and the base is grip resistant
• The 4 internal layers are:
  • Foam 1: Cooling cloud foam (same as the Puffy Original)
  • Foam 2: Plush dual cloud foam (only found in the Puffy Lux, designed to give you enhanced contouring)
  • Foam 3: Climate comfort foam (again, this is also found in the Puffy Original)
  • Support core: pocket coil spring support system: these flex in response to your body weight to give targeted support.
• This mattress has a medium plush feel: it’s a bit softer than the Puffy Original because it has one more comfort layer. I expect this to be more universally comfortable than the original, and will feel better on that shoulder for side sleepers.

Priced from $1449, the Lux is nearly double the price of the Original. What you’re getting extra for your money: a softer feel, an extra foam layer, and the choice of coils instead of foam base. It’s a big jump up in price, but it sits pretty much exactly where other brands using similar construction are. Remember to check for your discount!

Puffy Royal Mattress – The Best Puffy Mattress

The Puffy Royal Mattress is easily my favorite pick of the Puffy range, and I think it’s definitely the Puffy mattress you should buy. Sure it’s the most expensive, but get more features for your money than you do with the best selling Puffy Lux, and I think the features are pretty hard to beat.

• 14 Inch height which puts it into luxury mattress height (I personally LOVE a high mattress, but I have a low platform bed frame so the combo works well) and 7 layer construction
• Puffy counts the cover as 2 layers as it performs 2 functions: the top is a stain resistant stretch knit, and the base is grip resistant
• The 5 internal layers are:
  • Foam 1: Gel bead infused cooling foam (exclusive to the Puffy Royal)
  • Foam 2: Reflexive memory foam
  • Foam 3: Climate comfort foam like in the other two puffy mattresses
  • Foam 4: Cloud air technology foam, exclusive to the Royal – this foam has ventilation channels again in the cute design of Puffy clouds. The cloud air foam also performs another special function: it’s zoned for even more targeted support of your pressure points.
  • Support core: pocket coil spring support system: the coils are “contour adapt”, which as I explained above, flex in response to your body weight to give targeted support.
• Medium plush feel: this mattress has the deepest comfort layers of all the Puffy mattress models, but it’s also got the most going on in terms of targeted body weight support, so I think it’s going to be the most comfortable.

The extras you’re paying for with your Puffy Royal are that top layer of gel infused foam for cooling, the reflexive memory foam, the Cloud Air ventilated foam with the zoning feature for targeted support.

Sure, the price is a bit higher – starting at $1649 – but I really think the extras are totally worth it here and you’re getting a lot of mattress and a lot of awesome features for your money. I really like this mattress, and I’d be very happy to have one in my own house, on my own bed.
