Luckily, mattress companies are constantly trying to outdo each other and bring out the best new technologies, many of which involve keeping mattresses cool and ventilated. I spend hours reviewing mattresses, and am confident that with these top 5 best mattresses for hot sleepers in 2020, you’ll find the mattress that will have you starting this new decade sleeping cool and comfy.
Best Mattresses For Hot Sleepers: What To Look For
Hot sleepers are at the forefront of the minds of mattress developers, none of them wants a review where someone said they woke up in a hot sweaty mess because of their mattress. This is great news for you! It means that there are new innovations all the time to help you sleep cool, as the mattress giants battle it out to gain the cooling edge over their competitors. Here are some great mattress types and technologies to look for, and also some to avoid.
Mattresses by type:
- A hybrid mattress (which has a coil support core) can be a great choice because heat and air can escape out of the gaps between the coils. Look for hybrids that maximize on this by using cooling materials in the comfort layer and cover of the mattress too. One of my all time favorite cooling mattresses is a hybrid with lots of great technology inside it, you’ll find it below.
- A latex mattress is the most natural material option for hot sleepers. Natural latex is a naturally cooling material, it dissipates heat really well. Do make sure the latex used in the mattress is natural though. Latex mattresses are often one or several pieces of latex held together with natural glues. A full latex mattress is a great durable option, but if you like the idea of coils in the support core, I’ve got a great hybrid mattress that has a latex comfort layer for you to read about below.
- Foam mattresses have had a bad reputation because the original memory foams were not breathable at all, creating sweaty puddles in bedrooms around the world! Luckily, foam is where we’re seeing lots of great cooling innovations and there are lots of exciting options in this arena for you. Two of the best examples of amazing cooling foam mattresses are included below. When you’re looking at a foam mattress, make sure it has some ventilation in it. There are a variety of options including:
- Ventilation channels in the bottom foam layers to allow heat to escape (like it can through a hybrid coil system)
- Gel bead infusions into the top layers of foam to help absorb and dissipate body heat
- Copper infusions to help regulate body temperature
- Cooling or wicking fabrics in the cover
Materials to avoid:
The main thing to avoid is a foam or memory foam mattress that does not have any cooling innovations. Be wary of some cheaper models, particularly on Amazon, as they may present as a good-looking foam mattress but when you read about them you’ll find no mention of how the mattress keeps you cool.
Basically, if a foam mattress does not mention something like the technology listed above you should probably avoid it.
I would also avoid synthetic latex. Synthetic latex is an enticing option because it will have the great bounce of latex for a cheaper price tag, but the mattress will not be of the same quality and will not perform as well to keep you cool.
Bonus tips
- Look for mattresses with sleep trials of 100 nights or more and great customer service. It’s even better if a mattress has a one-year sleep trial (as some do below) as this means you can try the mattress out in all seasons
- Be mindful of what you cover your mattress with. The warranty of most mattresses will be voided if it gets stained or ripped, but most waterproof mattress protectors will not be breathable. If you put a non-breathable protector on top of your mattress, you’ll cancel out a lot of the cooling properties.
- Be mindful what sheet you use with your mattress. You’ll want to choose natural fibers that breathe and wick moisture. Here’s a detailed rundown of cotton vs bamboo, and here’s an article about sheets that perform like sportswear.
My Top 5 Best Mattresses For Hot Sleepers
Avocado Green Mattress: Best Eco Friendly Choice
The Avocado Green is a great choice for hot sleepers who are looking for an eco-friendly option that does not compromise on quality.
With its zoned support coils, naturally cooling latex and wool and hand tufted organic cotton cover, the quality of the materials used in this mattress is hard to argue with.
Not only is this a great quality mattress that will do a great job of keeping you cool at night, it also comes with a massive one-year sleep trial, so you can try it at home across all the seasons totally risk free.
Materials: Zoned support coils (to support the different areas of your body exactly as they need), organic latex, New Zealand wool, and organic cotton. The cover has the luxury feature of hand tufted buttons, which is incredibly rare at this price point.
Cooling Tech: Hybrid mattresses are usually pretty good at cooling because air can flow around the coils in the support core, which is not possible with a foam mattress. Even better, the comfort layer of (hard to find) organic latex is a naturally cooling material that needs no fancy technology to help it do its job. Wool and cotton are also natural temperature regulating materials, that breathe really well. Basically, every layer inside this mattress is working to keep you cool.
Sleep Trial: One year. Yes, you read that right. You can try this mattress out in the comfort of your own home for a whole year before you have to decide if it’s the right fit for you.

Brooklyn Aurora Mattress: Best Cooling Innovations
The Aurora Mattress from Brooklyn Bedding is one of the most advanced hybrids on the market. Before we even get into the amazing cooling properties Brooklyn have used in this mattress, it already has a rare competitive advantage: you can choose how firm you’d like your mattress! Most mattresses don’t give you any option, but you can choose from THREE different firmness levels to suit your preference when you buy your Brooklyn Aurora mattress.
Brooklyn Bedding have developed the Aurora using technologies designed to keep your skin at your optimal sleep temperature. They have developed and trademarked something called TitanCool, which works similarly to cooling gel beads and is infused into the surface of the foam. The unique difference with TitanCool is that it does not just cool, it has been designed to work with the optimum skin temperature to keep you feeling just right through the night.
Materials: The support system of this hybrid mattress is both foam AND pocket coils. The foam is the very bottom layer of the mattress and are there to act as an extra support for the coils. There are a generous three layers of comfort foams.
Cooling Tech: From top to bottom, this mattress works to keep you cool. The smooth weave of the cover allows the TitanCool infused foams to start working on contact. The first layer of foam, which is infused with the TitanCool, is ALSO infused with copper. Copper is known for its temperature regulating properties, so these two technologies in that first foam layer pack a double punch. The support coils of the mattress will allow air and heat to flow out of the mattress easily.

Plush Beds Mattress: Best Organic Choice
Plush Beds are a long established company who make a unique range of 100% latex mattresses. What’s unique about them? All of their mattresses are organic. While natural latex is easy enough to find, it is very difficult to find a mattress that is purely made out of organic latex.
Plush Beds have three organic latex mattresses in their range, each meeting slightly different needs, as you can see from the image above.
Materials: text
Cooling Tech: Organic latex, which is a material that is naturally cooling due to its ability to dissipate heat.
Sleep Trial: 100 nights
Warranty: 25 years
Price: From $2099. Organic latex is a more expensive mattress material, but it’s also the most durable. Plush Beds often offer deep discounts on their mattresses, go to my review link below to access today’s best deals.

Puffy Royal Mattress: Best Luxury Choice
The newest offering from popular mattress company Puffy, the Royal is jam packed with more features than pretty much any other foam mattress I’ve come across. It’s got so much going for it that it was even one of my all time top mattresses for last year.
Foam mattresses have to work harder to win the trust of hot sleepers, as memory foams have previously suffered from a bad reputation of trapping heat, leaving people in a sweaty mess. Advances in foam technology mean that those days are long gone, and with all the innovations of the Puffy Royal under you, you’ll feel like you’re on a cool cloud.
Materials: Firm foam support core, then four layers of foam in the comfort layer. Each of the four foams in the comfort layer has been specifically designed to perform a unique function. Many Puffy’s competitors may have one or two of these elements in their mattresses, but the four you get in your Puffy Royal is unprecedented.
Cooling Tech: Three out of the four foam comfort layers work hard to keep you cool. The top layer is infused with cooling beads, which help the foam to dissipate heat. The third layer is breathable, working to help create air flow around the mattress. The fourth foam layer has a cut out design, which allows air to flow out through the channels, working perfectly with the breathable layer directly above it.

Snuggle-Pedic Mattress: Best Budget Choice
Snuggle-Pedic is my favorite mattress that is sold on Amazon. It’s amazing quality for the money, and one of the few where you get a bigger sleep trial than Amazon’s usual 30 nights. In fact, you get the second longest sleep trial of the mattresses in this round-up, with a massive 120 nights.
Like the Puffy Royal, the Snuggle-Pedic mattress is a foam mattress. It has a patented air flow system designed especially for this mattress, so you will have no problem with getting hot as you sleep on it. Not only does it have this unique feature, but your Snuggle-Pedic can be customized to suit your comfort level at absolutely no cost. Their customer service really is above and beyond.
Materials: Two foam layers: one is a firm support foam and the other is a proprietary comfort foam called Snuggle Flex. Snuggle-Pedic also incorporates a patented air flow system within the mattress.
Cooling Tech: A breathable bamboo cover sits on top of the mattress, and both internal foam layers work to keep you cool. The comfort layer of “Snuggle Flex” foam is ventilated with a matrix of holes to allow air to flow through it. The base layer of firmer support foam has channels built into it to allow trapped heat and air to escape out of the mattress.
Sleep Trial: 120 Nights
Warranty: 20 Years
Price: Variable due to Amazon algorithms, but from around $500 (my links from the review below will automatically guarantee you the best price)

Editor’s Choice
My top choice has to be the Brooklyn Aurora Mattress. It really stood out to me when I was researching and writing this review for several reasons.
First of all, I think hybrids are a good design for hot sleepers because air can circulate around out through the support coils, so that’s a big tick from me.
I think the quality of the foams inside the mattress are excellent, and Brooklyn Bedding have worked hard to be industry leaders when it comes to cooling innovations. The combination of the TitanCool infusion and copper technologies will work really well to keep you cool at night.
With a price point starting from under a thousand dollars, it represents excellent value for money: you’re getting a lot of mattress for your cash.
