The Three Best Latex Mattress Toppers To Start 2020 Are:

Avocado Green Mattress Topper: Best Luxury Choice

avocado mattress topper review

Renowned for their signature Avocado Green Mattress, the mattress topper from Avocado is
made from the same high-end materials you’ll find in the mattress (minus the
coils, of course). This topper is a premium product, with a premium
price tag but the materials and extras you get with your Avocado Green topper make it worth every penny.

Materials: Organic cotton cover, layer of organic wool under the cover, 2 inches of organic Dunlop latex

Firmness Options: Plush or firm

Warranty: 10 years

Sleep trial: One year (no, that is NOT a typo. You can try this topper out in the comfort of your own home for a whole year)

Price: From $349 (most expensive in this review)

Quality of Materials: 5 out of 5

Customer Service: 4.2 out of 5

Value For Money: 5 out of 5

Overall Rating: 4.7 out of 5

What Makes The Avocado Green Topper More Expensive Than The Other Two Toppers?

  • It is handmade in California. Hand crafting takes time, and it
shows in the quality of the product you get. Even people who do not like
Avocado products after testing them (and leave one star reviews) often
can’t help but comment on the great quality.
  • It contains organic latex. Natural latex is relatively easy enough to come by, but organic latex is not as easy to find. It is the absolute pinnacle of quality in terms of latex.
  • It contains organic wool. Wool is another excellent
material that does not come cheap. In fact, the only mattress toppers I
have seen that are more expensive than the Avocado Mattress Topper are
toppers that are made with 100% wool.
  • It has a cover, which the others do not (unless you pay extra for one).
  • It has a massive sleep trial and the longest warranty.

I think that given the features this topper has, it is actually really good value for money.

Pure Green Natural Latex Topper: Best Budget Choice

Want to buy a topper that is popular in a crowd that’s tough to please? How about one that’s recommended by one of the biggest review sites on the internet? The Pure Green topper by Sleep On Latex is both. The tough to please crowd who discuss mattresses on Reddit only have good things to say, and thewirecutter also recommends it. It’s hard to look past those recommendations, particularly at this great value price point.

Materials: One, two, or three inches of natural Dunlop latex, no cover (you can purchase one separately if you wish)

Firmness Options: Soft, medium, or firm

Warranty: 5 years

Sleep trial: 30 days

Price: From around $69 (this one is sold on Amazon, who are constantly changing their prices. My links make sure you get the best price on any day)

Quality of Materials: 4.5 out of 5

Customer Service: 4.9 out of 5

Value For Money: 5 out of 5

Overall Rating: 4.8 out of 5

The reason why Pure Green starts at a much lower price than the other two is that they offer a one inch option in their topper range, whereas the others do not. The materials are just as high quality, and the CEO of the company is very active with replying to Amazon customers.

Editor’s Choice

So which of these three best latex mattress toppers would I choose if I were buying one for my own bed? Here’s how I’d narrow it down.

First, I prefer Dunlop latex for its springiness without being overly bouncy, and better durability. This would leave me with Avocado or Pure Green (many people actually prefer the airier feel of Talalay, it’s a personal preference).

Second, I really like to buy products that are all natural or organic where I can. Only the Avocado Green contains organic latex.

Third, I want a cover included with my purchase. Again, only Avocado offer this. Not only does this topper have a cover, it has a layer of organic New Zealand wool in it too, which gives it that extra luxury detail.

Therefore, I would choose the Avocado Topper for myself. I think you’re getting a lot of quality for your money and you can’t go wrong with a whole year to try it out risk free at home.

Do You Need A Mattress Topper?

There are several reasons why you might be looking at a new mattress topper. They are all about how you can make your current bed more comfortable without having to purchase a whole new mattress. Latex is an incredibly durable bedding material so you will find your new topper will outlast the mattress you put it on.

Perhaps your current mattress is feeling too firm? If this is the case, you can add a topper to your bed to soften the feel of it. We recently bought a new mattress ourselves: it is quite firm but we like it. Part of our recycling of our old mattress was to keep the pillowtop materials from our old mattress in case we want to try it with our very own, homemade topper! So if you want a topper without actually buying one, I’ve just given you a tip.

Does your current mattress feel too soft? This issue is not as easily fixed with a topper, as if the mattress feels saggy it could be that the mattress is either done for, or is not on a supportive enough platform. However, if you have an adequate support under a good mattress and it still feels too soft, adding a firmer feeling topper to your bed can definitely help.

Do you and your partner have totally different sleep preferences? If one of you likes a firmer sleeping surface and the other likes a soft one, it can be tricky to find a mattress that suits both needs. If you and your partner are currently struggling with the comfort of your current mattress or unable to decide what to pick in a new one, adding a topper to one side for one person can help.

What To Expect From A Natural Latex Mattress Topper

There are virtually no drawbacks to sleeping on latex, it’s my favorite mattress material. It is hypoallergenic, durable, and just plain comfy! The responsiveness and the way it supports your body as you sleep does feel rather different to a traditional spring mattress or memory foam mattress, so if you decide to buy this latex topper, be prepared for an adjustment period as you get used to the new feel.

Latex type: There are two options when it comes to natural latex, Dunlop and Talalay. Both are made using the sap of the rubber tree, but the processing is slightly different. The end result is that Dunlop is a bit more springy and durable, while Talalay is more airy and bouncy. Talalay may feel slightly softer, and is a popular choice for pillows. You can get the low-down on everything Dunlop Vs Talalay here.

The feel: Most of the toppers in this review come with several firmness options. The firmness is varied by changing the density of the latex. The softer the topper, the more it will yield to body pressure. A medium feeling topper works well for most people, as it provides a good balance of softness with support.

The great thing about adding toppers to a bed for couples is you can buy two twin XL sizes in different firmness levels if you and your bed mate if one of you likes a softer or firmer bed than the other.

The look: Two of the three toppers in this article do not come with covers, they are just straight out latex. Natural latex often forms air bubbles and small imperfections during the manufacturing process. If your topper arrives and you see these, don’t worry, they are totally normal and 100% unavoidable when making products with natural latex. Your topper will still be durable, high quality, and functional. It does surprise me though, that with such a “raw” look to it, that covers are not always part of the deal!

The smell: Your topper should have minimal odor when you open it. Whatever you do, don’t air it to get rid of any smell! This is the total opposite of what you’d do for a memory foam topper, which may need airing. While airing out a memory foam topper will help the gases from manufacturing dissipate, natural latex does not need this. In fact, if you put your latex topper outside to air, it can amplify any smell and make it harder to get rid of. So don’t do it! That’s a pro tip you heard here first.
