How to fix mattress indentation: I’ve got 7 simple things you can try. They’re a mix of solutions you can get up and try right now for free, through to some accessories you can buy to better support your mattress.
- Check Your Mattress Warranty
- Rotate Your Mattress
- Vacuum Your Mattress
- Pillows
- Strengthen Your Bed Base
- Get A Mattress Helper
- Get A Mattress Topper
1. Check Your Mattress Warranty
I’ve put this first because it’s a thing that you’d think was obvious, but not many people actually do. If your mattress meets a warranty claim, you can put it back on the manufacturer to fix it for you, instead of having to try any other makeshift solutions.
Many mattresses have a warranty period of 10 years. If your mattress has started sagging before you warranty is up, I’d strongly suggest you did out your paperwork or visit the company website to see if they need to either fix your mattress for you, or even better, replace it.
Body indentations are something that’s usually worded very specifically on mattress warranties, so check your policy. A good mattress brand will consider your mattress to be faulty if it’s formed body impressions of 1 inch or deeper. They’ll often ask for photographic evidence of this which can be tricky to get, so have someone help you take some photos.
2. Rotate Your Mattress
Did you know that most mattresses should be rotated (turned around 180 degrees, not flipped over) every 3 -6 months?
This is to help the mattress wear evenly. If you haven’t rotated your mattress for a while, probably the easiest thing you can do to try to fix mattress indentation is to rotate it and see if that helps.
Of course this may only be a temporary solution for you when you rotate it back to where you started, you’ll be in the saggy part again.
3. Vacuum Your Mattress
You may have thought that using a vacuum on your mattress was just for keeping it clean (which is a great idea to help extend its life). BUT, vacuuming your mattress can help even out any lumps and bumps that have formed in the mattress.
Even if this doesn’t work to fix any sagging in your particular mattress, keeping it clean will absolutely help extend its life further (if you can still bear sleeping on it, that is).
4. Fix Mattress Indentation With Pillows
Got spare pillows? Here’s a trick you can try (you’ll need at least two people for this one)
- Target exactly where the worst sagging is occurring
- Get one person to lift the mattress up
- The other person then slides the pillows onto the base, positioning them directly under the sagging
The pillows should fill in the gap and reduce the sagging. In my opinion this should be a temporary solution to mattress sagging (those pillows will probably get flattened soon enough), but it can work well if you’re getting really uncomfortable.
5. Strengthen Your Bed Base
Is your base letting your mattress down? This can be a particular problem with slat bases, if the slats are too far apart to support your mattress properly.
Many mattress brands will actually stipulate a minimum width for slats to be apart, and using anything wider can actually void your warranty!
A good way to shore up a bed base is to cut some plywood to the exact size of the base and put it under your mattress. This instantly gives a flat and supportive surface for your mattress.
I actually have ply on my own bed because we are currently using an older platform base which has slats that are just too wide for any mattress. It works really well! We’ll get a new bedframe one day, but until then this works well for us.
6. Get A Mattress Helper
A mattress helper is another thing you can put underneath your mattress to help fix sagging. It runs the length of the mattress and can be an easier solution than cutting up pieces of plywood. It’s also more economical than buying a mattress topper, so if you’re looking to buy a solution, a mattress helper could be the way to go. Get them on Amazon.

7. Get A Mattress Topper
As the name suggests, a mattress topper goes on top of your mattress.
They’re usually made of memory foam or latex, so they can perform the dual purpose of giving you extra support while also leveling out your mattress indentations. Mattress toppers are a popular fix for mattress indentations for people looking to improve the comfort of their mattress without actually buying a new mattress.
A firm mattress topper is going to be best because a soft one might just line up right into the sagging mattress spots.
If All Else Fails…
Then, my friend, it’s time for you to get a new mattress.
