Do You Need a Mattress Topper?

There are several reasons why you might need a new mattress topper. They are all about how you can make your current bed more comfortable without having to purchase a whole new mattress. I’ve seen a lot of questions from people asking if they should buy a topper when they buy a new mattress. The answer is no. You should only buy a topper if and when you need to change the feel of the mattress you currently have. If you have a new mattress that is uncomfortable hopefully you can exchange or return it.

Perhaps your current mattress is feeling too firm? If this is the case, you can add a topper to your bed to soften the feel of it. We bought a new mattress ourselves this year: it is quite firm but we like it. As time goes on (we are now nine months in) it is gradually softening. Part of our recycling of our old mattress was to keep the pillowtop materials from our old mattress in case we want to try it with our very own, homemade topper! So if you want a topper without actually buying one, I’ve just given you a tip. I always preferred a slightly softer feeling mattress than my husband, so the softening of the mattress along with our homemade topper means the mattress is feeling just right for me. Happy sleeps here!

Puffy advised me that their soft topper will soften the feel of a mattress by about two points (on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being very soft and 10 being rock hard).

Does your current mattress feel too soft? This issue is not as easily fixed with a topper, as if the mattress feels saggy it could be that the mattress is either done for, or is not on a supportive enough platform. However, if you do have an adequate support under a good mattress and it still feels too soft, adding a firmer feeling topper to your bed can help.

Puffy advised me that their firm topper will harden the feel of a mattress by about two points.

Do you and your partner have totally different sleep preferences? If one of you likes a firmer sleeping surface and the other likes a soft one, it can be tricky to find a mattress that suits both needs. If you and your partner are currently struggling with the comfort of your current mattress or unable to decide what to pick in a new one, adding a topper to one side for one person can help.

Materials and Construction

Available in either soft or firm, there is a Puffy topper that will meet the requirements of pretty much everyone. Prices range from $175 to $245. The topper is available in the following sizes:

  • Twin
  • Twin XL (this is the size Puffy recommends you buy if wanting to change the feel of one side of a bed for one partner)
  • Full
  • Queen
  • King
  • California King

The Cover: Thin, breathable, bamboo fabric with deep pockets (15 inches) to make sure your topper fits on any mattress. The cover is machine washable and features a cute cloud design.

The Comfort Layer: Two inches of CertiPUR-US certified memory foam. The soft and firm toppers have different foam densities to achieve the different feel but Puffy customer service were unable to tell me the exact density.

One Cool Feature: The base of the mattress topper has grippy fabric on it, so the topper will not slide around on your mattress.

What’s the Difference Between The Puffy Mattress Topper and the Puffy Mattress Pad?

The Puffy mattress pad does not contain memory foam, instead it has fluffy ball fiber filling made of polyester. Same as the topper, it is 2 inches thick.

The mattress pad is designed to add a softer cushion-like layer to a mattress, not change how the firmness of a mattress feels. So while it would soften a firm mattress a little and give a more cushy feel to the surface, it’s not going to shift the feel of the mattress as much as the topper.

In my opinion, the mattress pad is best for people who feel like their mattress is a bit “flat” to lie on and want a more pillowy surface. The topper, with its memory foam inside, will change the feel of the mattress more significantly and also give more contouring.

The topper and the pad are similarly priced items with different construction and purposes.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Generous amount of memory foam for the price
  • Breathable cover
  • Non slip base and deep pockets
  • Generous sleep trial and warranty
  • Responsive company to deal with (I live chatted with them a lot during my research)

Cons

Cons
  • Made in China
  • You must try the topper for at least 30 nights of your 101 night trial period before you return it

Is the Puffy Mattress Topper Worth Your Money?

With prices starting at $175 for a twin size topper, the Puffy Mattress Topper is priced at a mid-level point that will suit many customers. The cover is a nice quality breathable bamboo, and I think that two inches of memory foam is generous for the price. I have reviewed memory foam mattresses that don’t even have that much memory foam inside them!

What do other customers think of it?

From reading through the reviews on the Puffy website, the general tone of the comments were:

  1. People were pleasantly surprised at the high quality of the topper for the price
  2. The mattress topper performed as described, changing the feel of a mattress to be softer (soft topper) or firmer (firm topper)

However, I need to say that I find it a bit suspicious that I could only find 5 star reviews on the Puffy website for their topper. I like to see companies giving a whole range of customer experiences so I can help you decide if any problems people have with a product are legitimate. Puffy does have negative reviews on their site for other products of theirs, so maybe everyone is just really happy with their topper and I am too suspicious. I don’t know.

What are the Alternatives?

If you’re wanting a topper that is made from a combination of natural and organic materials, you might like to check out the Avocado Mattress Topper. Made from organic cotton, organic wool, and natural latex it’s about as premium as a topper can get. It comes at a premium price (about double that of the Puffy) but I think it’s worth it for the standard of materials and quality. Click here to read my full review of the Avocado Mattress Topper.

I’ve also written a comprehensive post about some of the best mattress toppers on Amazon. These include another 2 inch memory foam best seller, a topper that does the work of a topper and pad in one,  a latex topper that is cheaper than the Avocado, an organic wool topper, and one from a famous brand. Read about all these options by clicking here.
