1. Flash Furniture Capri Comfortable Sleep Hybrid – lots of happy customers

Flash Furniture is a furniture wholesaler (you cannot buy products directly from them). They sell a range of furniture including a wide range of bedroom furniture, but the Capri (in foam or memory foam) is their only mattress.

This is one of the best rated mattresses in this review. It is a popular mattress for people on a budget.

  • Sizes available: twin, full, queen, king
  • Feel: medium firm
  • Composition: 10 inches of pocket springs + either high density foam (alongside convoluted foam for breathability and fire retardant foam) or memory foam  (2 layers ) for a total mattress depth of 12 inches
  • Warranty: 5 years
  • Trial period: I could not find any information about a trial period, so this mattress would be subject to the usual Amazon 30 day return policy
  • Special features: handles on the side to help move the mattress easily. Striking black and white cover.
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Good quality for the price
  • Two choices of foam type
  • Expands quickly with minimal off gassing odor

  • Short warranty period
  • Chemicals are used in the fire barrier

My Opinion

Both high density foam and memory foam are lumped together for the questions and reviews here, which makes it difficult to tell exactly who is reviewing which mattress or if one is more popular than the other. My overall research and experience with mattresses leads me to recommend the memory foam model over the high density foam model as it will be firm but supportive, while I think the high density foam might feel too firm and be less responsive.

This is the only mattress in this review that offers high density foam though, so if that is what you are looking for then this is the mattress for you. I read through the one star reviews, and most of them were saying they felt the mattress was too firm, which further solidifies my recommendation to choose the memory foam version of this mattress.

I think it is a good, solid mattress for the price. However, the short warranty period would make me a little nervous.

2. Casper Original Hybrid Mattress – 2020 model

Casper is one of the most recognized brands in online mattresses. The Casper Original is one of the few Amazon mattresses that comes with a 100 night sleep trial, giving you flexibility and peace of mind.

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Feel: medium
  • Composition: 11 inches total height, three layers. Top layer is breathable airfoam, the middle layer is zoned memory foam for targeted support, the base layer is pocket coils encased in foam for edge protection.
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: 100 nights. This is massive for an Amazon mattress, most companies choose to defer to Amazon’s standard 30 day return policy.
  • Special features: zoned memory foam, cased coils and good sleep trial
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Hugely popular brand
  • Better sleep trial than others
  • Cool features like zoned foam and foam encased coils

  • Most expensive in this review

My Opinion

I think this sounds like a great mattress packed full of features that are hard to find in your run of the mill Amazon mattress offerings. I therefore think the higher price is justified here, and you’re getting good value for your money.

The only complaint I found when researching this article was that some people found it a bit soft. It’s rated medium, so I’d recommend this one for lighter people wanting a medium mattress or those who would like a mattress on the soft side of medium.

3. Linenspa 8 or 10 Inch hybrid – an Amazon top seller

Linenspa is a mattress brand that is extremely popular among budget shoppers. There are a lot of people out there who are very happy with their choice in this mattress. As it is such a talked about mattress, I have actually given it a full and comprehensive individual review.

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Feel: 8 inch = firm. 10 inch = medium -firm
  • Composition: the base layer is firm support foam and innersprings, the comfort layer is memory foam. The 10 inch model has a thicker layer of memory foam, giving it a thicker comfort layer.
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: 30 nights
  • Special features: fun color trim (teal)
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Lots of sizes available
  • Excellent customer service
  • Very comfortable when used on a sturdy base

  • Needs very frequent mattress rotation
  • Springs are not individually wrapped
  • 8 inch feels very thin

4. Linenspa 12 Inch Hybrid – softest choice

I introduced Linenspa in the mattress directly above this one, so rather than repeat myself I’ll dive straight into the facts and figures.

This mattress is not as popular as it 8-10 inch cousins. Offering a thicker layer of memory foam with gel and individually wrapped springs, it is a sturdier option.

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Feel: softer than its 8-10 inch counterpart above, this is the softest mattress in the Linenspa line.
  • Composition: 8 inches pocket springs + 2 inches of gel memory foam sandwiched between support and comfort foam
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: 30 days
  • Special features: eye catching teal trim
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Great customer service
  • Sturdy edge support
  • Pocket spring base

  • Soft feel not suitable for everyone

My Opinion

A softer option than the 8-10 inch, which will appeal to some users. I think that most will find the 10 inch is actually the most suitable for the most people out of the Linenspa options. The big advantage this mattress has over the other Linenspa mattress, however, is that it has individually wrapped (pocket) springs, which help reduce motion transfer. So if you want a Linenspa mattress and share a bed with someone who tosses and turns all night, this one could be the pick for you.

5. Signature Sleep Signature 10 or 13 Inch Hybrid – a durable choice

Signature Sleep mattresses are manufactured by Dorel Home Products. Dorel market themselves as being experts in small space living and in products that excel in design, quality, and price.

This mattress offers pocket springs for reduced motion transfer and the foam layers are composed of several thin layers rather than one thick one.

  • Sizes available: full, queen, king
  • Feel: soft-medium
  • Composition: pocket coils + high density foam + plush cover
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: subject to Amazon 30 day return policy only
  • Special features: rayon cover is made from bamboo, which provides extra breathability
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Breathable bamboo cover
  • Has most reports of lasting well for many years
  • Generally reported to be very comfortable

  • High density foam not as responsive as memory foam
  • Limited size options

My Opinion

The 13 inch is one of the softer mattresses, which will work very well for some readers. I really like the bamboo cover, that is a great feature.

6. Classic Brands Mercer 12 Inch Hybrid – best for gel foam technology

Classic Brands started out in the 1970’s…. selling waterbeds! They describe themselves as continuing to be dedicated to innovative design. Their goal is to provide you a mattress that is the ultimate in comfort for satisfying and restorative sleep. Those are some big goals to live up to.

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Feel: described as “cushion firm”, which I would interpret as a supportive medium firm.
  • Composition: 8 inch pocket springs + 3 layers of memory foam and 0.5 inches of gel memory foam + quilted cover
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: this mattress is subject to Amazon’s 30 day returns policy
  • Special features: option to buy as set with platform bed
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Innovative company with good technology
  • Easy to find information, company is responsive to customers
  • Lots of sizes available

  • Feels too soft for some

My Opinion

I think this is a great mattress overall. Classic Brands are a great company to deal with, and really seem committed to always innovating in what they are offering in their mattresses. If you know you definitely want a mattress that is on the firmer side, then perhaps this is not for you though. This is because a lot of people found the mattress softer than advertised, so just a heads up for you there. However, if you are looking for a medium mattress with lots of good stuff going on inside it, this would be a great choice.

7. Classic Brands Decker 10.5 Inch Hybrid – A cheaper option from Classic Brands

I have introduced Classic Brands as a company directly above, so let’s get straight into talking about the Decker mattress. The Decker is not as deep as the 12 inch Mercer above, nor does it contain gel foam so you’ll often find it comes at cheaper price, but you’ll need to check the exact details on the day, as Amazon prices can change depending on special offers.

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Feel: described as “cushion firm”, which I interpret as medium-firm
  • Composition: pocket springs + 2 layers of comfort foam (one soft, one firm) + 1 layer of memory foam
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: subject to Amazon’s 30 day returns policy
  • Special features: option to buy as set with platform base
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Innovative company with good technology
  • Progresive layering of foam for comfort
  • Budget price point

  • Quite a few reports of sagging after several months of use

My Opinion

The Decker sounds like a reasonable quality mattress given its price. While there are many happy customers who love theirs, others reported that their Decker sagged after a while. Personally, I would spend a bit more and get the Mercer above if I was to buy from Classic Brands.

8. Lucid 10 or 12 Inch Latex Hybrid – great if you would like latex

Lucid is a mattress brand owned by Linenspa, who I have introduced above. Lucid and Linenspa mattresses are marketed separately, and outside of Amazon they have their own web stores. However, within Amazon, customers inquiring about or purchasing Lucid mattresses are treated to excellent Linenspa customer service, with Linenspa being extremely responsive to questions and queries on Amazon.

This is the only mattress in this review to feature latex as part of its comfort layer. The benefits of latex are its breathability and feeling of bounce and support at the same time.

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, Californian king
  • Feel: firmer side of medium (rated a 2 on the Linenspa scale of 1-5, with 1 being firmest and 5 being softest)
  • Composition: pocket springs + support foam + gel memory foam, topped with latex
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: 30 nights per Amazon policy
  • Special features: contains both gel memory foam and latex, nice color contrast cover.
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Lots of technology for your money
  • Great customer service
  • Latex in comfort layer

  • Very frequent rotation required
  • May be too firm for some

My Opinion

I like latex. It’s hypoallergenic and breathable. It has a lovely, almost bouncy feel to it while still being supportive (I have a latex pillow myself). So I think that this latex containing hybrid sounds particularly attractive. I spent considerable amounts of time testing hybrid mattresses at my local mattress stores, and consistently found the latex containing mattresses to be the most comfortable for me. Do take note of where it sits on the firmness scale though, as the main complaint of the unhappy users was that this mattress was firmer than they would have liked.

9. Lucid 10 or 12 Inch Memory Foam Hybrid – innovative memory foam

The Lucid mattress above had the great feature of latex in the comfort layer, but this memory foam hybrid also has an interesting trick up its sleeve. The foam layers have been infused with charcoal (for odor elimination) and aloe vera (to promote calm and relaxed sleep).

  • Sizes available: twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, California king
  • Feel: on the plush side of medium, with a rating of 4 from Linenspa (their scale goes from 1-5 with 1 being firmest, 5 being softest)
  • Composition: pocket springs + support foam + aloe vera infused transition foam + charcoal infused memory foam
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: 30 nights per Amazon policy
  • Special features: charcoal and aloe vera infused into the foam layers. Available to buy as mattress only, or as bed set
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Infusion technology in the memory foam
  • Great customer service
  • Pocket springs

  • May not be firm enough for all
  • Very frequent rotation of the mattress is required

My Opinion

For me, personally, I think this sounds like a great mattress. My own preference is for a mattress that is plush to the touch whilst remaining supportive, which is exactly how this one sounds. The infusion technology with charcoal and aloe vera provides a nice innovative touch. Please do note that this is not a fluffy cloud though: I’ve seen reports of people buying this one expecting it to be softer than it actually is. There were reports of it sagging in the middle over time, but I will tell you the trick to avoid that in the buyer’s guide below.

10. Olee Sleep Box Top Hybrid – cheap gel infused memory foam option

Olee Sleep mattresses are manufactured by Grantec International: a company that has been in the business of making mattresses for 34 years. Providing good sleep through innovation in materials is a core part of their vision and mission.

It represents value for money with its foam technology and pocket springs.

  • Sizes available: full, king
  • Feel: plush (less firm)
  • Composition: pocket springs + high density foam + transition foam + gel infused memory foam
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Trial period: 30 days
  • Special features:
  • Eligible for Amazon Prime? yes

  • Lots of foam layers
  • Gel foam but budget price point
  • Pocket springs

  • Limited sizes available
  • Durability is questionable

My Opinion

This mattress sounds and looks great on paper, but I do not think I would buy it myself as there are some concerns around its durability…Maybe it is the payoff for the technology for the low price if you are prepared to risk it.

Hybrid Mattress Buying Guide

This buyer’s guide contains everything you need to know when you’re thinking about buying a hybrid mattress. I’ve organised it into the following sections:

  • What is a hybrid mattress?
  • Who are they suitable for?
  • What materials will I find in a hybrid mattress?
  • What are the important questions I need to answer before I make my purchase?
  • Emily’s bonus tips

What is a hybrid mattress?

A hybrid mattress is one that takes two other mattress types, and combines them to form a comfortable and supportive mattress. They always contain springs of some description as the supportive base layer of the mattress, and then another material for the comfort layer such as memory foam, which sits on top of the support layer. Because hybrids contain at least two different inner materials for the two different functions of support and comfort, they are called a hybrid. A pure spring mattress would just have springs and a plush quilted cover or pillow top, and a pure memory foam mattress would have a high density foam support base instead of springs.

Who are they suitable for?

Hybrid mattresses are suitable for a wide range of people and a wide range of sleeping styles because they tend to have a medium feel. This means they work great for couples where one likes a soft mattress and one likes a firm mattress: there will always be a happy medium to be found with a hybrid mattress. If you like a really really hard mattress (stomach sleepers in particular tend to need a firmer mattress) there are still options for you in hybrids, including some in this review. Same goes for if you like a softer one. Hybrids really can offer something for everyone.

They are a great choice for those wanting to dip their toes into newer mattress materials such as memory foam but not veer too far away from the traditional springs they grew up with at the same time. I think hybrid mattresses are a great bridge between tradition and innovation.

If you are a “hot” sleeper, you will find that alongside whatever cooling tech is in the comfort layer, having the springs as the support will allow for good breathability. In the hours of research I put into this review, I only came across one person reporting they slept hot on their mattress, and they realized the problem was actually their mattress protector, not the mattress itself (more on that below).

What materials will I find in a hybrid mattress?

Support layer:

  • Pocket springs: these are individually wrapped springs that act independently, providing superior motion isolation and support to the contours of your body. Wrapping the springs individually in fabric minimizes friction and maximizes support. Since they move independently and are encased in separate pockets so they contour precisely to each person. A Sleep Foundation survey found that partner movement disturbs the sleep of 24% of people, so this is an important quality to consider when choosing your mattress.
  • Innersprings: the traditional spring support you would have been used to growing up. The springs are not individually wrapped and are not as efficient as providing motion control and individualized support. My own personal opinion from testing out hybrid mattresses in store is that these springs also feel a bit bouncier than pockets (they would make the whole bed bounce unlike latex, which is bouncy but absorbing and supportive). It is outdated technology and becoming less and less common. Only one mattress in this review has this type of spring, and it’s actually a good mattress, but this factor would be a con rather than a pro to me.

Comfort layer:

foam and latex in mattresses
Examples of comfort layer materials: latex, memory foam, gel memory foam
  • Memory foam: memory foam was developed by NASA scientists and the technology has been picked up and innovated further by the sleep industry. Generally the foam is made from petrochemical products, which is why they can lead to an off gassing smell when you first open up the mattress (more on that below). Memory foam is a foam that will allow your body to sink into it, and it will then wrap around pressure points to support them. Modern memory foam should leave you feeling supported on the mattress, not stuck in a hole. There are lots of interesting innovations happening in memory foam, such as infusing them with other materials like charcoal for odor control, which you can read about in one of the mattresses in this review.
  • Gel memory foam: this is a memory foam with gel infused particles. This makes gel foam softer and cooler to sleep on than other memory foam because it is more porous (has more holes) than conventional foam.
  • Latex: traditionally sourced from the rubber tree, latex is a liquid that is manufactured into a foam. There are natural and synthetic varieties. Latex is known for feeling bouncy yet supportive. It is, in my opinion, an underused material that makes for very comfortable and high performing mattresses. It is known for its hypoallergenic properties. It is also incredibly breathable, due to the hole pattern as illustrated in the image on the right.
  • Many mattresses will use a combination of the above materials in their comfort layers.
  • What are the important questions I need answers to before I make my purchase?

    • How long is the warranty?
      • I think it is reasonable to expect a warranty of ten years for a new mattress. Many offer five years… while this is not a deal breaker for me I think it’s stingy and doesn’t say much about how much a company stands behind their product.
    • Is a trial period available?
      • I found it so interesting that none of the mattresses I have reviewed here offered longer than 30 nights to try the mattress. This was a bit of a surprise to me, as in reviewing other mattresses that are either all latex or all memory foam, there were generous 100-120 night trials. I will have to do further research into whether 30 days is just the standard for hybrid mattresses as I have not yet come across one with a longer trial. Maybe latex and memory foam mattresses need this to ensure sales as people might be less familiar with the technology and feel like they need to mitigate the risk they are taking.
    • What do other people using the mattress think?
      • I believe that the most useful tool you have when buying a mattress online is the opinions of other users just like yourself. Sellers can market anything to make it look good, so it is the opinions of other customers that really give the proof. That is why I tell you what people who love the mattress are saying, and try to help you decide how much importance to place on the one star reviews also.
    • What does the mattress feel like?
      • As you can see in the mattresses above, that while most float around having a medium feel, there are a couple that are definitely soft and one that is definitely firm. Make sure you have a good idea for the mattress you are looking at, as choosing the wrong firmness is something that can lead to a lot of dissatisfaction.

    Emily’s bonus tips

These are a few tips I have collated throughout my mattress research. They are either answers to questions that pop up on every single mattress, or things people could have done to improve their experience with the mattress they bought.

    • Buying on Amazon: make sure seller is either Amazon themselves or the manufacturer. There are many storefronts/sellers on Amazon, and some of them have less than stellar ratings. I cannot research every single seller on Amazon, and every mattress I recommend to you can be bought from Amazon or the manufacturer via Amazon. Other sellers may try to lure you in with cheaper prices, but you have to ask yourself if it is worth it. I did not come across this issue with any of these hybrid mattresses, but I have seen problems on other pages where people bought a mattress from one of these third party retailers and it was actually a return that had been repackaged. This puts you at risk of the mattress containing bedbugs, or goodness knows what else, never mind the fact it’s highly misleading. If you make sure the seller is Amazon or the brand manufacturer, then you are 100% guaranteed a brand new, no problem product. This is why I like to introduce each company to you, as you will have read from the individual mattress reviews above some brands are actually manufactured by other companies. For example, if you buy from Lucid you will ultimately end up dealing with Linenspa as they produce Lucid mattresses.
    • Make sure you have a suitable base for your new mattress. I have lost count of the number of times I have seen negative reviews about mattresses sagging when really, the problem all along was that they were not put on a supportive enough base. Any mattress will sag if it is not supported properly underneath. Hybrid mattresses generally work well on all base types, including adjustable bases. Just don’t put them (or any mattress) directly on the floor. If you are using a boxspring, make sure it is in good condition and not worn out. If you are placing it on a slat base, make sure the slats are no more than 3-4 inches apart. If using a metal grate platform, make sure it has a sturdy support down the middle.
    • Always use a mattress protector, and make sure it’s breathable. Using a mattress protector is the easiest and most convenient way to make sure your mattress stays clean. Some have a cover which looks like you can remove it, when actually it was not designed to be removed. Most companies will advise you to spot clean only, and will void your warranty if you get any stains on it. So it’s a bit of a no-brainer to use a mattress protector. Make sure you choose one that is made of a breathable material such as bamboo, as this will help you retain any cooling tech inside your mattress. If you put a non-breathable protector on, you will block the flow of heat to the mattress and you may end up sleeping hot despite the mattress having cooling technology. This is another completely avoidable thing I’ve seen people leave one star reviews about.
    • If you choose a hybrid that contains memory foam, it may have an off gassing smell from memory foam components when you first open the mattress. This is normal and nothing to worry about, let the mattress air out and it will dissipate quickly. Most of the mattresses in this review are Certi-PUR US certified. This means they do not contain any known harmful chemicals despite the smell they might have when you first open the mattress up (some of the smell is just the packaging anyway).
