You’re looking for a mattress without fiberglass and you’re interested in buying a mattress from Zinus. Zinus is a well known brand, their mattresses are cheap, and tons of people love them. But you’ve also heard about fiberglass in mattresses causing problems. You want to make sure you’re getting a mattress that’s a good deal, and doesn’t contain fiberglass. So, can you get a Zinus mattress without fiberglass?

The short answer here is no. You cannot get a Zinus mattress without fiberglass. I’ve asked them directly, and they have confirmed that all their mattresses contain fiberglass. So where does that leave you? Let me explain:

  • Why Zinus uses fiberglass in mattresses
  • What’s the problem with fiberglass in mattresses
  • It it still worth buying a Zinus mattress?

Why Zinus Uses Fiberglass

All mattresses sold in the United States are required (under federal law) to have a fire barrier between the top cover and the materials inside the mattress. As you might imagine, mattresses can be incredibly flammable, with their soft foams inside.

Fiberglass makes a cheap and effective fire barrier because it pretty much just melts on itself, massively slowing down any fire. The cheap alternative companies were using before developing fiberglass socks for their inner mattress covers was a cocktail of fire retardant chemicals, which are no good for you.

So, fiberglass gives a cheap, chemical free fire barrier. This is why you’ll find budget mattress brands like Zinus and many others using Fiberglass in their fire barriers.

What’s The Problem With Fiberglass In Mattresses?

If you don’t open your mattress cover and make sure the cover stays intact, you SHOULDN’T have a problem with the fiberglass, because it will be contained within the mattress.

If the fiberglass gets out for any reason, it can cause problems such as:

  • Itchy skin
  • Breathing issues
  • Contamination of your bedroom (and home)

Once fiberglass gets out, it’s pretty much impossible to clean up, and has caused many an unsuspecting person massive problems. Again, the problem is that fiberglass is often used in cheap mattresses, which may also have cheap covers prone to tearing, exposing the fiberglass inner.

However, if you buy a mattress knowing it’s got fiberglass in it, and use a mattress protector, you should be fine.

Is It Still Worth Buying A Zinus Mattress?

Zinus DO make pretty great mattresses for the price, in my opinion. They use fun technology like green tea infusions, and they are a massively popular brand. As long as you make your purchase aware of how to look after your mattress and NEVER remove the cover, then yes, I would buy a Zinus mattress even though you can’t get a Zinus mattress without fiberglass.
